ICAD 2001

Welcome to ICAD 2001

We and the whole organizing committee have been enthusiastic to arrange this conference. We are satisfied that researchers and professionals around the world have come together in ICAD 2001 to share the knowledge and ideas around this interesting field of auditory display.

These proceedings cover the seventh International Conference of Auditory Display. We are sure you will find the papers enlightening and high quality. The papers cover an impressive array of topics across a diverse spectrum of auditory display. We hope you appreciate the efforts the authors have made on their papers and enjoy their contributions to the field of auditory display.

Before the actual conference days we provide two interesting tutorials for you on Sunday afternoon. In the first tutorial professor Perry Cook covers the field of physically based sound synthesis, and in the second tutorial professor Lauri Savioja with his colleagues explains the basics of auditory displays in virtual room. We trust that you will find these tutorials as well as the two keynote speeches given by professor Matti Karjalainen and professor William Martens interesting and useful.

The paper selection was based on extended abstracts, which were submitted electronically. We got 60 submissions, and all papers were reviewed by three expert reviewers (familiar with the subject area). The papers were evaluated by the overall rating from 1 (strongly reject) to 4 (strongly accept). The average of reviewers rating was 2.7 or higher for papers accepted as oral presentation (total amount 36), and 2.5 or higher for posters (amount 12). We would like to thank the international review panel for their effort and time.

In addition to the scientific program, we have arranged a number of social events to make informal communication between the participants possible. On Sunday evening we have an informal Get together party at Otaniemi, on Monday evening we cruise to Kulosaari to have a banquet there, and on Tuesday we will enjoy the outdoor life in Nuuksio National Park. We hope you all find these events refreshing, and relaxing.

On behalf of the organizing committee and others who have worked for the ICAD 2001, we wish you a most rewarding and enjoyable conference.

Matti Gröhn,
ICAD 2001 chair

Tapio Lokki,
ICAD 2001 secretary

Tapio Takala,
ICAD 2001 papers chairman
