We are most delighted to welcome you to join us at the 8th IEEE Signal Processing Advances in Wireless communications (SPAWC) workshop, which will be held at the Grand Marina Conference Center in Helsinki, Finland, June 17 - 20, 2007. The SPAWC meeting is the prime IEEE workshop focused on signal processing for wireless communication. The conference will feature exciting planery talks and large number of world-class results and presentations on timely topics on communications and wireless systems.

This workshop brings together members of the signal processing, communications and information theory communities, working in universities, research centers and telecommunications companies.

Visiting Finland is always a good idea, and specially during the summer, when the weather is fairly warm, everything is green and flourishing and the days are long. Helsinki region has many places to visit with your free time, especially, if you are planning to come with the family and stay a couple of days after or before the conference.

Helsinki is conveniently located. There are daily direct flights from most capitals and main cities in Europe. There are also direct flights to many Asian metropolitans including Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou (Kanton), Tokyo, Osaka, Bangkok and Singapore. The direct flights to United States are from JFK. From other major US cities the connections are through major European HUBs, i.e., London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Copenhagen.

The Grand Marina Conference Center is in center city Helsinki. It is only 20 minutes drive from the Helsinki airport. The conference center is located by the sea close to the passenger boat harbor, main government square and buildings, Helsinki farmer's market, many restaurants, pubs and hotels. Conference banquet will take place in the beautiful Knights House, a place where the nobleman and aristocrats used to get together. The banquet will feature nordic food and cultural experiences.

We have exciting collection of plenary presentations. The plenary speakers are: Petteri Alinikula, Nokia Research Center, Holger Boche, Heinrich-Hertz Professor, TU Berlin, Hagit Messer, Tel Aviv University, Simon Haykin, McMaster University, and Lang Tong, Irwin and Joan Jacobs Professor in Engineering, Cornell University

There will also be a visit to Nokia Research Center (NRC) in Helsinki. We will have opportunity to hear Nokia view of future wireless systems as well as demos of gadgets and applications designed for future wireless devices. The visit is hosted by Dr. Petteri Alinikula, head of core technology research in NRC.

Since quite a few attendees will be traveling with families, we have paid special attention to family program. Moreover, the kids can join there parents in conference banquet at very reasonable price.

Finally, we would hope that you not only enjoy the technical and social programs the organizing committee prepared for you, but also have the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the midnight sun and nordic nature.
