What is Statistical SignalProcessing?

Statistical Signal Processing is an extension of classical signal processingto the design of digital filters that process uncertain data in an optimalmanner. The two main areas of statistical signal processing are estimationand detection. In estimation we need to determine the value of unknownparameter or signal using observed data. In detection we need to make adecision such as are there signal and noise present or just plain noise.Key application areas of Statistical Signal Processing include telecommunications, sensor array signal processing, spectrum estimation, radar as well as imageand video signal processing.
